On Monday, January 22, 2018, Presidents, Chancellors, Provosts and other America’s Urban Campus
leaders joined Chicago’s Mayor Rahm Emmanuel and other civic leaders at University of Illinois at
Chicago to discuss important issues facing the City of Chicago and their institutions. The central theme
of the meeting was the critical role Higher Education plays in the Pre-K-Career pipeline. In discussing the
relationship between educating children and the recruitment of top industry to the City, the attendees
addressed these key themes:
  • Improving the outcomes of Chicago’s Public Schools
  • Increasing the number of students eligible for the Chicago STARS scholarship at City Colleges of Chicago
  • Recruiting students to Chicago’s colleges and universities
  • Recruiting top industry to employ Chicago’s well-trained workforce
Robert Morris University President, Mablene Krueger, and other attendees discussed working together to overcome obstacles to these goals such as addressing structural racism and segregation as well as educating the State Legislature about the education and economic imperative of funding the Monetary Award Program.
